The Unlimited Hemp Company was created in 2018, emerging from the Standing Rock pipeline protest in 2016. The Unlimited Hemp Company through its alliance with Indigenous Nations is expected to be one of the world’s largest organic hemp growing operations with up to 2.5 million acres of indigenous hemp growing land and a relatively unlimited indigenous labor force. The Unlimited Hemp Company is expected to have growing operations in Indigenous territories of Quebec, British Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. The Unlimited Hemp Company hopes to use hemp to create new medicines, to reduce deforestation, to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and to create a more sustainable world. Indigenous peoples have been using hemp for a long time.
“Some of the earliest evidence of hemp in North America is associated with the ancient Mound Builders of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley. Hundreds of clay pipes, some containing cannabis residue and wrapped in hemp cloth, were found in the so-called Death Mask mound of the Hopewell Mound Builders, who lived about 400 B.C.E in modern Ohio. The French explorer Jacques Cartier also reported seeing wild hemp during each of his three journeys to Canada between 1535 and 1541. His last report enthused that “the land groweth full of Hempe which groweth of it selfe, which is as good as possibly may be seene, and as strong.” Later, Samuel de Champlain mentioned in 1605 that the natives used “wild hemp” to tie their bone fishhooks.”
The Standing Rock pipeline protest against Energy Transfer Partners’ DAPL (Dakota Access Pipeline) brought together Indigenous peoples, environmentalists, water protectors, climate change activists, human rights advocates, social activists, and people who wanted to change the world. As the energy of Standing Rock pipeline protest dissipated, the activists formed the Unlimited Hemp Company.
As a community of activists, we believe that hemp can provide major solutions to some of the planet’s most pressing problems including climate change, deforestation (“hemp pulp paper, hemp wood, hempcrete”), poverty (“jobs and income security”), food security, medicines (“CBD and Terpenes”), soil remediation, plastics pollution (“bioplastics”), fossil fuel extraction (“biofuel”), mining (“composites”), energy (“hemp batteries and fuel”) and so much more.
The idea of the Unlimited Hemp Company was also inspired by the 1969 Woodstock counterculture movement with the advocacy for cannabis/hemp, freedom, civil rights, women’s rights, peace, cooperation, indigenous spirituality, good health, communities and getting back to nature. Another thing that inspired the founders of the Unlimited Hemp Company is LiveAID, which brought the world together to help the famine relief in Africa.
The counterculture movement is a big part of the Unlimited Hemp Company’s philosophy of thinking differently. In 1994 David Kam, the Original Founder and Chairman of the Unlimited Hemp Company, was inspired to create healthier drinks, which led to the formulation of one of the world’s first energy drinks, called E=MC2; the 100% natural ginseng based energy drink made with the purest spring water was distributed by the Pepsi Cola Bottling Group across Western Canada as a pilot test. The only other major competitor at that time was Red Bull. His foray in the energy drink sector provided him experience in the drink business, and knowledge of nutraceuticals, product formulations, organic products, franchising, retailing and marketing. The E=MC2 energy drink was sold at Costco, 7-Eleven, Walmart, KFC, Pizza Hut, health foods stores and everywhere that carried Pepsi. In 2010 David Kam exited the corporate world to become a lifelong environmentalist, activist, and indigenous rights advocate after helping fight forestry companies who wanted to clear-cut 97% of the Anishnabe Nation of the Ottawa River Watershed’s forests where the Indigenous peoples lived. In 2013 David Kam set out on a “personal mission to end global poverty” after he had a vision to replant the Tree of Life and also to honor his eldest brother who died from starvation in China after WW2. David Kam hopes to complete the mission of ending global poverty in his lifetime by advocating cryptocurrencies such as the Earth Dollar, creating a new Living Economy, and this hemp project.
Meanwhile, Co-founder and President of Unlimited Hemp Company, Nate Loughran in 1998 entered the Cannabis business starting in Humboldt County, California. Nate Loughran believes everyone has the right to eat and wants to help feed the hungry. Nate Loughran a veteran of the hemp industry and one of the top cannabis/hemp educators in the world; he has been advising the cannabis/hemp industry across America for the last 21 years.
Co-founder and V.P. of Indigenous Affairs and the Cosmetic Division of Unlimited Hemp Company, Sheri Lewis in 1997 entered the Organic Cosmetics and Skin Care Business. Sheri Lewis had previously worked for Estee Lauder. Sheri Lewis has 9 years’ experience in formulating, marketing and working with organic skin care products, learning her craft through Color Labs in Florida.
In 2016 David Kam and Sheri Lewis teamed up to help the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in fighting the DAPL by supporting the Water if Life (“mni wiconi”) movement. This led them to organizing and supporting protest events worldwide and at the United Nations.
Co-founder and CFO of Unlimited Hemp Company, Mesfin Zaid joined David and Sheri in supporting the indigenous peoples at the United Nations in 2017. Mesfin Zaid was born and raised in Ethiopia/Eritrea. Not surprisingly, Mesfin Zaid is an advocate of cannabis/hemp, since Ethiopia was the birthplace of the Rastafarian monks, who first adopted cannabis in their daily meditations. Rastafarianism was also popularized by Bob Marley whom Mesfin Zaid met just before he passed away. Mesfin Zaid is a retired banker; after working for 39 years in executive levels at banks such as Well Fargo, he retired to focus on humanitarian projects. Mesfin Zaid helped spearhead the improved stove, solar lights, and green energy projects in the villages of Africa.
Kyle Roman the COO joined the Unlimited Hemp Company to head the operations of the Organization. Kyle Roman has experience in Cannabis/Hemp financing, trading and wholesaling. Kyle is very passionate about the remediation of the soil, and using hemp to improve our environment.
In 2018, things came full circle when the Anishnabe Nation of the Ottawa River Watershed, the indigenous nation that David Kam help support in 2010, teamed up with the Unlimited Hemp Company to grow hemp on “virgin and organic land that has never been used for agriculture; the premium organic hemp will be watered by some of the world’s purest spring water”. The Unlimited Hemp Company hopes by growing hemp, we can stop the clear-cutting of the forests forever by providing the paper companies with alternative hemp pulp to make paper.
After months of brainstorming, we came up with a name: Unlimited Hemp, which meant that hemp has unlimited potential to change the world but also that every member of the human family has “unlimited potential” to make a positive impact on the world. And with a new name and our cooperative business model, the Unlimited Hemp Team hopes to change the world by growing and advocating hemp.
